ChatGPT Dots vs Claude is an always-on agent with its own cloud computer against a faster assistant you point at the job. After testing Dots on launch day, my verdict is that Claude Sonnet 5.5 or Opus 5.5 with browser use gets you "faster, better results" and is simpler to run. Dots has one real edge, and it's a big one: it keeps working while you're away. For most day-to-day work, though, Claude got me to a finished result sooner.

I spent 30 September 2026 putting Dots through real tasks on camera: calls, avatars, research, bookings and website design. Below I compare what worked, what broke, and how it stacked up against the Claude models I already use every day. If you want the full Dots breakdown first, read my OpenAI Dots overview.

Two Different Shapes of AI

Before you compare features, you need to see that Dots and Claude are built in different shapes. According to OpenAI's DevDay announcement on 29 September 2026, Dots are always-on personal agents powered by GPT-6 Astra. Each Dot gets its own cloud computer, connects to more than 4,000 apps, and learns from your feedback over time. You give a Dot a goal and it carries on in the background.

Claude works the other way. It's an on-demand assistant from Anthropic that you point at a specific job, and it does that job quickly. It can use a computer and a browser, but it doesn't sit there running 24/7 unless you give it a harness to live in. I run Claude inside Claude Code and inside Hermes through the official subscription plugin, and that setup is where it does its best work.

So the Dots vs Claude question comes down to this. Do you want an agent that lives on its own machine and keeps going, or a sharp assistant that finishes the task in front of you fast? Most people think they want the first one. What they actually need most days is the second.

If you want to learn how to set up Claude agents properly, the AI Profit Boardroom has 3,000+ members and a full Claude Opus 5.5 course, with the exact workflows I use.

ChatGPT Dots Vs Claude: The Side-by-Side Table

Here's how the two compare on the things that matter when you're trying to get work done. The Dots facts come from OpenAI's announcement, the Claude facts come from Anthropic's official pages, and the speed and reliability rows come from my own testing.

Speed in Real Tasks

Speed is where the Dots vs Claude gap was clearest for me. I asked Dots to make an avatar and it took 20-30 minutes. From Sonnet 5.5 I'd expect roughly 5-6 minutes for the same job. When I kicked off a research task, the Dots cloud computer needed about 2 minutes just to get started, before any real work happened.

Anthropic says Claude Sonnet 5.5, released on 28 September 2026, gives more than 30% faster output than Sonnet 5 and up to 30% lower cost per task. It also has a 1M-token context window and runs in claude.ai and Claude Code. Honestly, Sonnet 5.5 was a much better release this week than Dots, and I cover the details in my Sonnet 5.5 release breakdown.

Dots wasn't all slow. The restaurant booking worked in about 5 minutes, and research briefs, website builder design and parallel tasks all finished. But when I'm running a business, the time between asking and getting it done matters a lot, and on that measure Claude won almost every time.

I track this kind of thing properly on Goldie Bench, where I put models through the same real-world tasks so the comparison is fair.

Computer and Browser Use

Both Dots and Claude can operate a computer, and this is the part most people care about. With Dots you get a managed cloud computer. You can watch it work, and there's a take-over mode so you can jump in and steer. In my tests take-over mode worked well, and running several tasks in parallel was genuinely useful.

The trouble is the startup time and the rough edges around it. Claude's computer use and browser use are what I can comfortably rely on. With Sonnet 5.5 I point it at a browser job and it simply gets on with it, without a long spin-up and without the access errors I hit on Dots.

Opus 5.5 came out one week before Sonnet 5.5 and costs $4/$20 per million tokens on the API. It's pretty amazing for the heavier reasoning jobs. My split is Sonnet 5.5 for fast browser and computer tasks and Opus 5.5 when the thinking is hard. If you run Claude through Hermes, my Hermes with Claude setup guide walks you through it.

Where Dots Genuinely Wins: Always-On

To be fair to Dots, it has one clear advantage. A Dot is always on. It lives on its own cloud computer, it keeps going while you sleep, and it learns from your feedback. You don't need to build a harness, set up a server or write a schedule. For someone who wants an agent that just runs in the background, that's a real selling point.

Claude doesn't do this out of the box. To make Claude run 24/7, you give it a harness or a schedule, such as Claude Code routines or a Hermes /goal. It isn't hard once you know how, but it's an extra step, and that's the honest trade-off.

Here's the catch, though. If always-on autonomy is what you actually need, other agents deliver it more reliably right now. Hermes and Grok Bot both run around the clock, and in my experience they're steadier than Dots on launch week. Compare them in my ChatGPT Dots vs Hermes and ChatGPT Dots vs Grok Bot reviews. For the full setup behind running agents all day, see the Agent OS guide.

Cost and Access

Access is a real problem for Dots right now. According to OpenAI, Dots is available on ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium in eligible markets, and Pro excludes the EEA, Switzerland and the UK. You get one Dot per user. During my test I also ran into region and workspace access problems, so even if you pay, you might not get in straight away.

Claude is much easier to get hold of. You can use it through Claude plans or the API, and it's broadly available. According to Anthropic, Sonnet 5.5 costs $2 input and $10 output per million tokens on the API, and Opus 5.5 costs $4/$20. If you're already paying for a Claude subscription, running it inside Claude Code or Hermes through the official plugin doesn't add much to your costs.

On cost and access, Claude wins clearly. It's available in more places, it's priced per task, and you can start today without waiting for your region to be switched on.

Who Should Pick Which

Choose Claude if you want work done fast. That covers research, writing, browser tasks, coding, building websites and anything where you're waiting on the result. Sonnet 5.5 is the speed pick and Opus 5.5 is the deep-thinking pick. That's what I use every single day.

Choose Dots if you're on ChatGPT Pro in an eligible market and you specifically want a managed, always-on agent with 4,000+ app connections and no setup. Just go in expecting launch-week rough edges.

If you want always-on and reliability together, don't settle for either on its own. Run Claude inside an always-on agent like Hermes. That gives you Claude's speed and the 24/7 autonomy that makes Dots appealing in the first place. Inside the AI Profit Boardroom I show you exactly how to set this up. It's $69 a month, locked in, and normally $110.

FAQ

Is Claude better than ChatGPT Dots?

For getting tasks done quickly, yes, in my testing. Claude Sonnet 5.5 and Opus 5.5 with browser use gave me faster, better results and were simpler to use. Dots is better only if you need an agent that stays on by itself without any setup.

Can Claude run 24/7 like Dots?

Yes, with a harness. Claude doesn't stay on by default, but you can run it continuously using Claude Code routines or a Hermes /goal. I run Claude inside Hermes through the official subscription plugin so it keeps working in the background.

Which is faster for computer use?

Claude, in my experience. The Dots cloud computer took around 2 minutes just to start a research task, and an avatar took 20-30 minutes. Sonnet 5.5 is the model I can comfortably rely on for computer use, and it's much quicker.

Final Word on ChatGPT Dots vs Claude

Dots is an interesting launch and the always-on idea is the right direction. Right now, though, ChatGPT Dots vs Claude is an easy call for most people: Claude gets the work done faster, it's easier to access, and it's more reliable. If you want always-on, put Claude inside Hermes instead of waiting for Dots to mature.
