When you weigh generative engine optimization vs AEO, you do not have to pick one: almost every tactic that helps you get cited in AI answers (GEO) also helps you become the direct answer (AEO), so one plan covers both. The only real question is where to start, and that comes down to your business type and where your customers ask their questions.

Most people waste months arguing about labels. Meanwhile their competitors get named in Google's AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT and Perplexity. This page skips the definitions and goes straight to priorities: which tactics to do first, which ones help which side, and what to focus on for your kind of business.
If you want this worked out for your site specifically, get a free SEO strategy session. My team looks at your site, your competitors and your nearest-win keywords on a one-to-one call, then gives you a game plan for Google and AI search. The Quick Difference
AEO, answer engine optimization, is about being THE answer: featured snippets, voice assistants, and now AI answers. GEO, generative engine optimization, is about getting named, cited and recommended inside AI-written answers from ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Copilot, and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode.
They overlap heavily. And both rest on SEO, because AI answers summarise pages that rank and sources they trust. If you want the full history of each term, read generative engine optimization vs answer engine optimization. Here we are focused on action.
Generative Engine Optimization vs AEO: The Tactics Table
This is the table I would want if I were starting from zero. It lists the practical things you can do this month, and whether each one moves GEO, AEO, or both.
| Tactic | Helps GEO | Helps AEO |
|---|---|---|
| Answer the question in the first sentence | Yes, gives AI a clean line to quote | Yes, this is the core of AEO |
| Question-style headings with short answers | Yes | Yes, made for snippets and voice |
| FAQ section on every key page | Yes | Yes |
| Publishing your own case studies and tests | Yes, strongly. AI quotes public testing | Yes, makes your answer the trusted one |
| Comparison articles (X vs Y) | Yes, these worked well in my own data | Yes, people ask comparison questions |
| Being mentioned on several sites and platforms | Yes, strongly. AI pulls from many sources | Partly |
| Publishing within about 24 hours on trends | Yes | Yes |
| Ranking organically in Google | Yes, the foundation | Yes, the foundation |
| Fact-checking AI-assisted content before publishing | Yes | Yes |
Look at the right two columns. Almost every row says yes twice. That is why I tell people to stop splitting budgets between "AEO" and "GEO". The only row that leans one way is being mentioned across lots of sites. That one matters more for GEO, because generative answers blend many sources and pick a handful of names.

Which to Prioritise by Business Type
Here is how I would set the order of work. Same tactics, different starting point.
Local businesses
Start on the AEO side. Local customers ask direct questions, often by voice: who is open, who is near me, who is best for this job. Make sure your pages answer those questions plainly in the first lines, with FAQ blocks. Then work outward to get mentioned on other local sites so generative answers have more sources naming you.
Agencies, consultants and personal brands
Lean into GEO first. People ask AI "who is the best X" and get a short list of one to three names. You want to be on it. That is where case studies and being everywhere matter most. This is exactly how I approached "best GEO expert", and Google's AI answer and AI Mode now name me first. If you are hiring outside help for this, read my take on choosing the best AEO consultant.
Software and SaaS
Prioritise comparison content. Buyers ask AI tools to compare products. Write honest X vs Y pages, alternatives pages and how-to pages built on your own testing. They feed both sides at once.
Communities, courses and info products
Go GEO first with real proof. When people ask for the "best AI community", the AI Profit Boardroom comes up number one in Google's AI with two placements, and the content ranks number one organically too. That came from publishing lots of angles that all point to the same answer.
Publishers and content sites
Speed is your edge. Be first on trending topics, within about 24 hours, and make every article answer the core question immediately. That serves AEO and gives generative engines something fresh to cite.

Why One Plan Covers Both
I do not run separate AEO and GEO campaigns. I run one plan built on what I call the Answer Engine framework:
- Be the source. Publish real case studies. Your own tests are facts the AI cannot invent.
- Be everywhere. Several sites and platforms, including r/AISEOInsider, each angle pointing to the same answer. If one site drops, the others stay.
- Be first. Publish within about 24 hours on trending topics.
Each step helps both. Being the source makes you the answer and the citation. Being everywhere gives answer engines and generative engines more places to find you. Being first means you are there before the competition.
It also lines up with Google's updated guidance from 1 October 2026: it is critical to fact-check and review AI-assisted content before publishing, including text, metadata, structured data and image alt text. Case studies make that easy, because you are writing about things you actually did.
How I Run the Plan with Free Tools
You do not need an expensive stack. Mine is Hermes Agent (free and open source), OpenCode as the free brain running DeepSeek V4.1 Flash, and Google Search Console. The full setup is in my Agent OS guide.
- Export your Search Console data to CSV.
- Give it to Hermes and ask it to analyse what is working and suggest keywords and topics to rank in AI search.
- Hermes builds a report: clicks, brand share of clicks, non-brand click-through rate, and what is working. For me that was comparison articles, Agent OS clusters, the free AI community, and Antigravity and Hermes topics.
- Pick a keyword.
- Give Hermes an SEO skill and access to WordPress or Netlify. Mine is a roughly 100-point quality checklist, which lives inside the AI Profit Boardroom.
- Let it write and publish, built around your own case studies.
- Check AI Mode, AI Overviews and Perplexity.
Using this approach, one of my sites went from zero to 1,300+ clicks a day, with one day showing 9,600+ impressions in Google's AI features. A community article ranked within three days. I test models before trusting them in this loop, and you can see how on Goldie Bench.

What to Do This Week
- Pick your five most important questions customers ask.
- Search them in Google AI Mode, AI Overviews and Perplexity. Note who gets named.
- Rewrite your matching pages so sentence one answers the question.
- Add one real case study or test result to each page.
- Publish one comparison article.

FAQ

Start with whatever matches how your customers ask. Local businesses usually start with direct answers (AEO). Agencies, experts and communities usually start with getting named in AI lists (GEO). The tactics overlap, so you are not wasting effort either way.
Do I need two separate strategies?
No. Be the source, be everywhere and be first. That one plan serves both.
Is SEO still needed for GEO and AEO?
Yes. AI answers summarise pages that rank and sources they trust. SEO is the base layer.
Can someone help me choose?
Yes. Get a free SEO strategy session. It is a one-to-one call, not a written report, and you leave with a game plan. Or book your free strategy call directly.
