Learning how to do GEO comes down to a five-step loop I have run in public: pick the questions buyers actually ask, publish answer-shaped pages that deserve the citation, show up on every surface the AI engines read, keep your brand facts consistent, then monitor your AI mentions and feed what works back into the loop. That is the exact system behind the 90,000 AI mentions in 90 days run I documented on my own brand, and none of it needs a big team or budget.

GEO feels intimidating because the surface changed. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews answer buyers directly, so the win condition moved from "rank on page one" to "get named inside the answer". The work underneath is boring and repeatable, which is the good news. If you want theory first, my generative engine optimization guide covers what GEO is and why citations behave differently from rankings, and GEO vs SEO covers how the two stack instead of competing. This page is purely the how.

How To Do GEO: The Five-Step Loop

Here is the whole GEO system on one screen. Run the steps in order, then repeat the loop monthly — the compounding comes from the repeat, not the first pass.

StepWhat you doWhat you get
1. Question miningCollect the exact questions buyers askA prioritized sheet of money questions
2. Answer-shaped contentPublish one clear page per questionPages engines can quote
3. Multi-surface presenceSay the same things on site, video, communitiesCorroboration engines trust
4. Brand-fact consistencyOne identical description everywhereAn entity engines can resolve
5. Monitor and iterateMonthly prompt-runs, log who gets namedData on where citations stick

Step 1: Mine the questions buyers actually ask

GEO starts with questions, not keywords. AI engines answer full questions in full sentences, so your raw material is the exact phrasing real buyers use. I pull questions from four places: communities where my buyers hang out — my own AI Profit Boardroom feeds half my sheet because members post exactly what they are stuck on — YouTube comments, Google's People Also Ask boxes, and sales calls, because every live objection is a question thousands of people are typing into ChatGPT.

Prioritize money questions over information questions. "Best X for Y", "X vs Y", "is X worth it" — these are the prompts buyers fire at an engine minutes before a decision, and where a citation actually pays. Build a sheet with four columns: question, buyer intent, which engine answers it well, and who gets named. That last column is your hit list.

Step 2: Publish answer-shaped content

Engines lift answers, so publish pages shaped like answers. My rule for GEO content: the direct answer lands in sentence one, evidence follows, and every genuinely distinct question gets its own page instead of one bloated mega-post. A model scanning your page to answer "is X worth it" wants a verdict it can quote, not 800 words of warm-up.

Formatting that earns citations: comparison tables for every "X vs Y" question, FAQ blocks that mirror the exact phrasing from your question sheet, and clear declarative claims a model can lift with your name attached. Being quotable is a skill — make one specific claim per section and stake your name on it. Vague content gets summarized anonymously; sharp claims get attributed.

Step 3: Show up on every surface the engines read

AI engines corroborate before they cite. A claim that exists only on your own site is one weak signal; the same claim on your site, your YouTube channel, Reddit and two communities starts to look like consensus. This is why my daily YouTube tutorials to 394,000+ subscribers do so much GEO lifting for me — the transcripts feed the engines the same claims my articles make, in the same words, from a second surface they demonstrably read.

You do not need 394K subscribers to make GEO work. You need presence on the surfaces the engines actually pull from: your site, a channel answering the same money questions on video, genuine answers on Reddit and in niche communities, all under the same name. Consistency across surfaces beats size on any single one.

Step 4: Keep your brand facts consistent

Engines resolve entities, not just pages. If LinkedIn says "growth marketer", your site says "SEO consultant" and YouTube says "AI automation guy", the model cannot connect the three into one person, so it cites someone it can resolve. Pick one two-sentence description of who you are and who you serve, then enforce it everywhere: site footer, about page, every profile, every directory.

This is the least glamorous step in GEO and the one most people skip. It costs an afternoon: same description, same name format, same headshot on every profile you control. Boring, one-time work that lets the engines merge your scattered mentions into a single entity worth naming.

Step 5: Monitor your AI mentions and iterate

Once a month, ask the engines your own money questions and write down what happens. Run the exact prompts from your Step 1 sheet through ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, and log who gets named, who gets linked, and whether you appear. During my 90-day run the pattern showed inside a month: certain page formats kept getting cited, others never did, so I made more of the first kind. That is the entire iteration engine.

Double down where citations stick. If your comparison pages get named and your listicles never do, the engines just handed you your content roadmap. GEO rewards the loop, not the launch.

Measuring GEO Without Fooling Yourself

Honest warning: GEO measurement is immature. There is no Search Console for ChatGPT, and plenty of "AI visibility" dashboards just re-run prompts behind a prettier interface. A spreadsheet and a disciplined monthly prompt-run beat imaginary dashboards, because you know exactly what was asked and what the engine said back.

Track three things: whether you get named on each money question, whether you get linked, and whether AI referral traffic shows in your analytics. My 90,000 AI mentions in 90 days number came from this kind of logging: counted, dated, repeatable, not vibes. Engines vary their answers between runs, so judge the trend across months, never a single response.

Scaling GEO With Agents

Every GEO step above is a checklist, and checklists are what agents are for — question mining, drafting, monthly prompt-runs and mention logging can all run on autopilot after a manual cycle or two. That is how I run the loop across a whole network of sites without a content team: my Agent OS guide shows the setup, jev-seo is how I check which models make decisions fast enough to trust inside the loop, and Goldie Bench is where I test which models actually write pages worth publishing. Start manual, then hand the repeatable parts to agents.

GEO FAQs

How long does GEO take?

Plan for one full quarter. My documented run hit 90,000 AI mentions in 90 days, but that was on an established brand with hundreds of pages and a large YouTube channel already feeding the engines. From zero: month one is publishing and baselining, month two brings first citations on lower-competition questions, month three is doubling down on the formats engines keep lifting. GEO compounds rather than spikes.

Can I do GEO without a big site?

Yes. Engines cite the clearest answer from an entity they can resolve, not the biggest domain — small sites get named in AI answers constantly when they hold the sharpest page on a question. Focus helps GEO: ten answer-shaped pages on related buyer questions, consistent brand facts and two or three active surfaces beat a sprawling site full of vague content. Big helps, sharp wins.

What tools do I need for GEO?

A spreadsheet, the engines themselves and something to publish with — that is genuinely the GEO stack. Your question sheet lives in a Google Sheet, monitoring is a monthly prompt-run through ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini with the answers logged, and your analytics already record AI referral visits. Paid AI-visibility trackers exist, but do not buy one until a manual monthly run has proven which questions matter for you. Disciplined logging beats any dashboard you do not interrogate.

That is how to do GEO: mine the questions, publish the answers, cover the surfaces, lock your facts, monitor the mentions, repeat.
