The right LLM SEO provider is one that can show you real searches where AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews already name them or their clients, tracks your AI visibility every month, and builds real links instead of selling you AI-spun content. That's the short answer. This page shows you the types of provider out there, a 10-question checklist to vet them, the red flags to walk away from, and the bar every provider should be measured against.

What an LLM SEO Provider Actually Does
LLM SEO means getting your brand mentioned, cited and recommended by large language models and AI search: ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Copilot, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. You'll also hear it called GEO or AEO. Same goal.
An LLM SEO provider is whoever you pay, or join, to make that happen. The job covers prompt research, answer-ready content, case studies, entity and schema work, link building and tracking. Classic SEO still sits underneath it all, because AI answers summarise the pages that already rank.
Providers come in four main shapes. Each one suits a different business.
The Four Types of Provider
- Agency. A team that does the work for you, end to end. Best when you want it done and have the budget.
- Consultant. One expert who sets the strategy and advises your team. Best when you have people to do the work but need direction. Our page on choosing an AEO SEO consultant goes deeper on this route.
- Freelancer. One person doing hands-on tasks, often content or links. Best for small, clearly defined jobs.
- DIY community. Training, templates and support so you do it yourself. Best when you want the skill in-house and want to keep costs low.

Provider Types Compared
| Type | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Agency | Businesses that want the whole job done, from research to links to reporting | Rebranded SEO shops that added "AI" to the homepage with no proof of AI citations |
| Consultant | Teams with writers and developers who need a clear strategy | Advice with no follow-through, and nobody owning the results |
| Freelancer | Small, specific tasks like writing pages or building a set of links | No tracking, no strategy, and quality that varies job to job |
| DIY community | Owners and marketers who want to learn and run it themselves | Communities with old trainings and no one actually testing what works now |
There's no single right answer. A small local business might start in a community, then hire an agency once it's growing. A bigger brand might hire an agency and a consultant together. The checklist below works for all four.

How to Vet an LLM SEO Provider: 10 Questions
Ask every provider these before you sign anything. The good ones answer fast and show you proof. The weak ones change the subject.
- Can you show me live AI answers that name you or your clients? Real searches, done in front of you, not old screenshots.
- Which prompts will you target for my business, and how did you choose them?
- What will my monthly report show about AI visibility? You want prompts tracked and cited pages listed, not just keyword positions.
- How do you turn our results into case-study content? First-hand data is what AI tools cite.
- Where do your links come from? Ask for examples. Manual outreach on real sites is what you want.
- Who fact-checks content before it goes live? Google's updated guidance on 1 October 2026 says to review all AI-assisted content, including page text, metadata, structured data and image alt text.
- Beyond my website, where will my brand show up? Communities, social platforms and other sites all feed AI answers.
- How fast can you publish when something new happens in my industry?
- Tell me about a campaign that didn't work. Anyone who claims every test wins isn't testing.
- What happens in the first 30 days? You want a clear plan, not vague promises.

Red Flags That Should End the Call
- Guaranteed AI citations. Nobody controls what ChatGPT or Google's AI says. A guarantee means they're either guessing or lying.
- No tracking. If they can't tell you which prompts mention you today, they can't tell you if anything improved.
- AI-spun content. Hundreds of unchecked AI articles is not a strategy. It goes against Google's updated guidance, and it gives AI tools nothing new to cite.
- No links. AI answers lean on pages that rank and brands mentioned on trusted sites. A provider that skips links is skipping half the job.
- PBNs and link farms. Cheap now, expensive later.
- No public proof. If they can't get themselves cited, they probably can't get you cited.

The Bar to Measure Every Provider Against
I use a framework called the Answer Engine. It's three moves, and it's a simple way to check whether any provider knows what they're doing.
Be the source. Put real case studies and tests in every page, something AI can't make up. When I search "best GEO expert" in Google, the AI answer names me first and says I'm known for documenting GEO experiments and public testing. My pages show up several times in the cited sources.
Be everywhere. Run multiple sites and platforms, like a community and the r/AISEOInsider subreddit, each with a different angle pointing to the same answer. The AI sees the same name in several top results. For "best Hermes AI SEO expert", the AI answer recommends me, sourced from my content on several platforms. And if one site drops, the others stay.
Be first. Publish on trending topics within about 24 hours, before anyone else has a page. My "best AI SEO community" article was ranking three days after it went live, with the AI Profit Boardroom at number one and my free community at number two.
Links still do heavy lifting too. For "best HARO agency", the AI Overview lists five suppliers, and Goldie Agency is the one it links out to first. One of my sites went from zero to about 1,300 Google clicks a day, and on one day got over 9,600 impressions in Google's AI features. Another site flopped. Not everything works, which is why you test.
Ask any provider how they handle each of the three moves. If they can't answer clearly, keep looking. Want to see how we apply all three to your site? FAQ
What is an LLM SEO provider?
An LLM SEO provider is an agency, consultant, freelancer or community that helps get your brand mentioned and cited by AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews, on top of classic SEO.
Should I hire an agency or a consultant?
Hire an agency if you want the work done for you. Hire a consultant if you have a team that can do the work but needs a strategy. Either way, use the 10-question checklist above.
Can any provider guarantee AI citations?
No. Nobody controls what an AI says. Treat any guarantee as a red flag and ask for live proof and honest tracking instead.
