Grok Bot plugins are the connectors that let a Bot work inside your apps, like Gmail, Notion, Linear, GitHub or Stripe, through a proper API instead of clicking around a website. You add them from Connect Apps in the sidebar, or you just ask the Bot to install one, and since v0.71.2 on 14 October 2026 a Bot can use up to 200 skills from the plugins you have installed.

That number used to be 24. The jump changes what one Bot can carry. Below: how plugins work, how to install them, how to add your own MCP server, which connectors the changelog names, and what team admins can lock down.

What Grok Bot plugins actually are

A plugin is a packaged connector. It gives the Bot a set of tools for one service. The official docs at docs.x.ai say apps are "more reliable than clicking through a website when one exists", and that the browser is for services without an app.

Three things matter here:

Each Bot also has its own cloud computer with a browser, so plugins and computer use work side by side. The plugin handles the structured job. The browser handles the rest. If you want the full picture of the computer side, read our guide to Grok Bot computer use.

If you want to run this kind of connected agent setup without being tied to one vendor, the AI Profit Boardroom ($69/mo) gives you the Agent OS built on Hermes Agent, daily tutorials as new tools drop, weekly coaching calls and a prompt library you can copy straight into your agent.

How to install a plugin

There are two routes, and the second one is faster.

Route 1: Connect Apps

  1. Open Connect apps from the sidebar. On the phone, tap your avatar top left.
  2. Search or browse. Since v0.70.2 (11 October 2026) the list shows the most-installed apps first.
  3. Choose Add. Since v0.77.0 (26 October 2026), Add installs the app and opens sign-in in one click.
  4. Finish the provider login in your browser.
  5. Check the app shows under Installed.

One trap: the docs say "Added" means installed, not signed in. If the Bot says an app is missing, open it and choose Authenticate.

Route 2: Ask the Bot

Say "Add the Linear app" and the Bot searches the catalog, installs it and shows a Connect card when you need to sign in. In v0.70.2, xAI added that you can paste a connector link and the Bot installs the matching plugin. In v0.77.0, the Bot started checking the plugin catalog on its own when you ask for an app that isn't installed. And since v0.75.8 (24 October 2026), a plugin installed mid-task can be used right away.

There's a third nudge too. In v0.78.1 (27 October 2026), sign-in pages for Cloudflare, Coinbase, Gusto, YouTube, Railway, Google Ads, Meta Ads and TikTok for Business started offering the connector instead of a screen login.

Custom MCP servers

The catalog isn't the limit. The docs say a Bot can add an MCP server that isn't in the catalog, by URL or by a command that runs on its computer. A server started by a command becomes available to your other Bots too.

The changelog tracks how this grew:

Adding a server on a private network, or one with a private certificate authority, always asks for your approval first.

The 200-skill limit

Plugins bring skills with them. A skill is a saved set of instructions for a job. Before v0.71.2, a Bot could use 24 skills from installed plugins. Now it's 200.

Why this matters: a small business owner might want one Bot that handles bookkeeping in QuickBooks, invoices in Stripe, the calendar and the inbox. At 24 skills you hit the ceiling fast. At 200 you can stack several business plugins on one Bot.

The built-in GitHub plugin shows the other side of this. In v0.54.0 (16 September 2026), its Marketplace page started listing every tool so you can turn them off one by one. Fewer tools means fewer ways for the Bot to do the wrong thing.

Connectors named in the changelog

xAI hasn't published one full catalog list in the changelog, but these connectors are named across the release notes. Grouped by job:

Two notes from the docs. Gmail connects one mailbox at a time. The X plugin needs X API credits on your own X developer account.

Team admin controls for plugins

On a team, plugins follow the team's connector policy. The teams docs say there is no separate Grok Bot connector list. Admins set which servers members can use from the Team Marketplace.

Shared Bots add a twist. A shared Bot uses the plugins its owner added, and in your own chat it asks before it touches one of your personal accounts. More on that in our Grok Bot teams guide.

Grok Bot plugins vs an open agent stack

Grok Bot's plugin system is polished. Install in one click, tokens kept off the computer, admin policy built in. The catch is that everything runs inside one vendor's cloud and one vendor's plan.

Hermes Agent takes the open route. It uses MCP servers and skills too, but you pick the model, you run it where you want, and you keep the setup if you switch providers. We compared the two side by side in Grok Bot vs Hermes, and if you want a no-cost route, see our Grok Bot free alternative breakdown.

The Agent OS wraps Hermes into a working dashboard with skills, routines and connectors ready to go. Start with the Agent OS guide. To see which models do best inside an agent like this, check our Goldie Bench results.

If you'd rather get the whole setup handed to you, the AI Profit Boardroom walks you through it step by step, with coaching calls where you can ask about your own business.

FAQ

How many plugins can a Grok Bot use?

The changelog caps skills, not plugins. Since v0.71.2 a Bot can use up to 200 skills from installed plugins, up from 24. Installed apps are account-wide, so every Bot you run can reach them.

Can I add a connector that isn't in the Marketplace?

Yes. A Bot can add an MCP server by URL or by a command on its computer. Servers on a private network or with a private certificate authority ask for your approval first. Servers on a private Tailscale network can't be reached yet, so xAI points to Tailscale Funnel.

Why does a plugin say Disabled by team admin?

Your team's connector policy blocks it. An admin has to allow it in the Team Marketplace, and add it to the MCP allowlist if the team uses one. Then restart the app.

Does the Bot see my passwords when it uses a plugin?

No, according to the docs. OAuth tokens sit on the connector backend and the Bot calls tools without receiving them. With 1Password, you approve each login in 1Password and it fills the login without the Bot seeing it.
