Grok Bot launched on 11 August 2026, and I had it running the very next morning to settle one question: Grok Bot vs Hermes — which one actually deserves to run your business? I use Hermes every single day, so this is not a spec-sheet comparison; it is what happened when I gave xAI's brand-new team of agents the same kind of work my own stack already handles.

Short version: Grok Bot has the best onboarding I have ever seen on an agent product, one genuinely brilliant idea worth stealing, and a computer-use mode that fell over on the simplest task I could invent. Here is the full Grok Bot vs Hermes test — the good and the bad.

What Grok Bot actually is

Grok Bot is xAI's team of AI agents, launched into public beta on 11 August 2026. The pitch is simple: instead of one chatbot, you get a team, and each agent gets its own computer in the cloud — a real machine that belongs to the agent, with its own screen. The agents sign into your apps with accounts, then click, type and read their way through work the way a person would. They handle PDFs and files, run multi-step tasks, keep working after you close your laptop, and come back when they are finished or when a decision needs a human.

It is available on Mac, Windows, Linux and iPhone in beta, with Android on the way. The price is $200, and I will be honest: that is a bit expensive. I got the free trial just by being an X subscriber, and access also starts with the top Grok and Cursor tiers — xAI built this with Cursor, and the two are tied together at launch. Bigger companies go on a waitlist. Context worth knowing: since the July SpaceX merger, xAI operates as SpaceX AI, though it is the same Grok brand and team behind the product.

The origin story — and the claim I am not swallowing whole

Grok Bot started life as an internal tool. xAI's own sales, marketing and ops teams used it for their day-to-day work, it spread across the company, and then they shipped it — which is almost exactly the Claude Code origin story, and usually a good sign.

xAI says staff report 2–3x output with it. My caveat: that is a company grading its own homework, and there are no independent tests yet. I will give them this much, though — when a team genuinely cannot stop using a tool internally, it usually means something.

The good: what Grok Bot gets right on day one

Onboarding first, because it genuinely surprised me. Before anything else, Grok Bot asks what you want it to focus on — day-to-day ops, SEO, inbox, calendar — and builds from your answer. Agent setups like Hermes never do this. Normally you are dropped into a config file and wished good luck. Here, the product meets you where you are, and it works.

The second thing I liked is the shape of the app. Your agents sit on the left sidebar like Telegram or WhatsApp contacts, each with its own conversation. That sounds trivial. It is not — it instantly makes a team of agents feel like an actual team. I customised one straight away: renamed it CEO, gave it a title and description, switched off its notifications. Two minutes in, and I had a named colleague rather than a chat window.

Then Gmail. Connecting it took a couple of clicks — authorise, sign in, done — and the agent started drafting replies in my tone by reading my previous sent emails. Not generic AI-speak; my actual phrasing. Crucially, everything is saved as drafts rather than auto-sent, and you can schedule the routine to run daily. The whole flow feels smoother and easier than Codex, and I do not say that lightly.

The bad: the hello test

Then I tested the headline feature — the agent's own cloud computer — with the simplest task I could invent: open Google and type hello. That is the whole task. It is pure Goldie Bench method: same task, tools compared, judged on what actually happened rather than what the demo promised.

What actually happened: the agent crawled through the job screenshot by screenshot, got stuck, and never got there. My note at the time was blunt: it can't even use Google. So my verdict on Grok Bot's computer use is just as blunt — it is super slow, and just as bad as every other computer agent I have tested. And because the product is already pricey, I would worry that heavy computer use burns through the meter fast. The app integrations are far more useful than the cloud desktop, by a distance.

One more warning before you kick the tyres: as a free-trial user, I ran out of tokens in about 20 minutes. Budget your testing time accordingly.

What Hermes brings to the fight

Hermes is the agent I actually run daily, so here is the honest counterweight. It is a free, open-source agent from Nous Research with 30 native tools, 80 skills and persistent memory — it remembers your business between sessions instead of starting cold. It learns new abilities as simple markdown skills, and I have taught mine everything from SEO workflows to odd experiments like my paperclip test.

The structural difference is that Hermes is provider-agnostic. You can put any model behind it — including Grok 4.5 free via X OAuth, which I covered in my guide to the best free AI model for Hermes. It runs through terminal, desktop and messaging gateways, and if you want a friendlier front end there are solid options in my best Hermes web UI roundup.

The honest trade: Hermes is harder to set up than Grok Bot's onboarding. Nobody asks what you would like to focus on first. But you own everything, you pay nothing for the agent itself, and nothing in your stack is waitlisted or metered by a vendor.

My verdict: would I switch?

Would I move anything I currently run over to Grok Bot? Absolutely not. I am happy with Claude, and I prefer my Agent OS for agents working together — my agents already operate as one team, on machines I control, with no meter running.

But there is a lesson here worth stealing, and I want to be fair about it: the one-chat-per-agent shape is genuinely great. And you do not need Grok Bot to have it. You could set up the same thing today with Hermes profiles, or one chat per agent in Telegram — one for Claude, one for Hermes, one for OpenClaw. The idea is free, even if the product is not.

Who should pick what

Strip the noise away and Grok Bot vs Hermes comes down to one question: do you want to rent the future or own it?

Grok Bot vs Hermes: FAQ

Is Grok Bot worth $200?

Only if the app integrations alone justify it for you — the tone-matched Gmail drafts and the friendly team setup are genuinely good. I found it a bit expensive for what shipped on day one, especially with computer use in its current state.

Did Grok Bot kill Hermes?

No. Grok Bot won the onboarding race by a mile, but Hermes still wins on cost, ownership, model choice and flexibility. Nothing I saw on launch day made me move a single workflow.

Can Hermes do the same team-of-agents setup?

Yes — that is exactly the part worth copying. Use Hermes profiles, or give each agent its own Telegram chat, and you get the one-contact-per-agent shape without the subscription. My Prime Agent breakdown goes deeper on how I structure agents that carry real responsibility.

Is Grok Bot's computer use any good?

Not yet. In my test it moved screenshot by screenshot, got stuck, and failed to open Google and type hello. It is super slow, and on a metered product that slowness costs you twice.

Can I try Grok Bot for free?

I got a free trial just by being an X subscriber, and the top Grok and Cursor tiers include access. Fair warning from my run, though: the trial tokens lasted me about 20 minutes.

The final word

On day one, Grok Bot vs Hermes splits cleanly. Grok Bot is the friendliest door into the team-of-agents future, and it holds your hand from the first click. Hermes is the door you own — steeper on day one, free forever after, with any model you like behind it. The polish is real, the sidebar-of-colleagues idea deserves to be stolen, and the computer use is nowhere near ready. I walked away impressed by the shape and unmoved on the substance: my agents are staying where they are.
