Hermes Agent v0.22 is the Threshold Release from Nous Research, and the headline change is simple: a brand-new user can now open Hermes Desktop and be talking to an AI agent in minutes, with no API key, no config file and no terminal. It shipped on 13 October 2026, and per the release notes it is the biggest update Hermes has ever had.

What Hermes Agent v0.22 is (the Threshold Release in numbers)
Hermes was the Greek god of thresholds: the doorway, the crossing. The release notes put it in one line: "v0.21.0 assembled the pantheon; v0.22.0 is about getting through the door."
So v0.21 gave Hermes its powers. v0.22 makes them easy to reach. The official v0.22.0 release notes went up on GitHub on 14 October, with a release date of 13 October.
| Metric | v0.22 |
|---|---|
| Commits since v0.21.0 | ~24,200 |
| Merged pull requests | ~6,080 |
| Issues closed | ~7,180 |
| Contributors | ~2,520 |
| Size of the cycle | About 2.5x the v0.21.0 cycle |
| Codebase | About 1.06M to 698K lines (a third smaller) |
| Plugin catalog | 600 reviewed plugins, all new this cycle |
It also rolls up the v0.21.1 to v0.21.7 patch releases. If you are coming from those, my Hermes Agent 0.21.4 update breakdown shows where things stood before this.
The first-hour problem
Here is what I see every time I help a business owner start with AI agents. The agent is never the problem. The power was already there. The door was hard to open.
People get stuck on the boring stuff. Getting an API key. Editing a file. Finding a setting. They lose an hour, feel stupid, and quit before the agent does a single useful thing.
This release takes the tech part out of that first hour. I think about it as the Front Door Engine, three moves: walk in, plug in, hand off.

Move 1: Walk in
Walking in means getting from zero to talking to your agent.
Setup is now a chat
Open the desktop app on a computer where you have never used Hermes and you get a short setup chat, not a settings screen. One card at a time it asks your name, an accent colour and a layout, which apps to connect and which plugins to install. Then it gives you a quick tour and offers up to four first tasks picked for you.
It runs on a free trial model called nous/welcome, once per OS user, so you need no key. Skip setup ends it. Settings → Run onboarding again brings it back.
The agent also got a set_theme tool, so you can type "make it violet, dark mode" in any desktop chat and it just does it.
Local models in one click
Per the release notes, Hermes can now run open models entirely on your machine. No account, no API key, nothing leaving your computer. It installs and maintains llama.cpp with the right engine for your hardware, rates every catalog model against your GPU and RAM, and picks the highest-quality build that fits.
- Start from Settings → Providers → Local Models, or hermes model → Local models in a terminal.
- Works on Windows, macOS and Linux.
- The catalog includes Qwen3.8 27B, Qwen3.8 Flash Next, Qwen3.6 35B-A3B and DeepSeek V4 Flash, plus any GGUF from Hugging Face.
- Downloads pause and resume, and engine updates are one click.
Signed packages and stable releases
The desktop app is now a sealed, signed package that carries its own Python and Node, so first launch builds nothing. Windows gets a signed MSIX through App Installer or the Microsoft Store. macOS gets a signed, notarized build for Apple Silicon.
Hermes also ships tested SemVer releases now, and installs follow them by default instead of tracking every commit. Want the bleeding edge? Run hermes update --set-channel main. Moving to an older release is labelled a rollback and never happens without asking.
Move 2: Plug in
Plugging in means your agent can reach the tools you already use.
Connectors
Hermes can now act inside hosted apps like Linear and Notion through the Nous tool gateway. Ask for an app, sign in once in your browser, and the tools work in the same turn.
You do not need a Nous account to start. The first time you use an app, Hermes creates a free connectors-only identity. A new Connectors page puts hosted apps and your MCP servers in one list and replaces the MCP tab. You can connect several named accounts of one app, like a work and a home account, and manage them with /connectors or hermes connectors.
The 600-plugin catalog
The plugin catalog launched this cycle and grew to 600 entries. Each one is pinned to a reviewed commit and installs from Hermes Desktop or the CLI. Per the release notes, all 600 listings are new this cycle. I went through how the marketplace works in my Hermes Agent plugins marketplace guide.
Password-manager sign-in for the browser agent
The browser agent can now log into sites with logins from 1Password, Bitwarden or Hermes's own encrypted vault, and the model never sees the password. Per the release notes, one-time codes are filled without entering the conversation, and card and address fills at checkout need your confirmation. If nothing is saved, you get a masked prompt to save it.

Move 3: Hand off
Handing off means trusting the agent with real work that runs for a while.
Bot Screen
A bot running on a Linux gateway can now have its own desktop that Hermes Desktop streams live. When it hits a login, a 2FA prompt or a CAPTCHA, you take the screen, finish that step yourself, and hand control back while the bot carries on. It is off by default and needs host packages. More on bots in my Hermes Agent bot mode walkthrough.
Reasoning that survives long jobs
Prior reasoning is now replayed by default on every provider that can read it, across resume, branches and compaction. So long multi-step work keeps its train of thought.
Riding out provider slowdowns
When a provider has a bad hour, Hermes waits out transient 503, 529 and timeout errors in visible, bounded cycles instead of ending your turn. The wait is bounded by agent.auto_recovery_cycles, default 5. A turn liveness watchdog, default 600 seconds, interrupts a turn that makes no progress and frees its session.
That builds on the scheduled jobs from v0.21. As I said in the video, your 9am briefing knows what it told you yesterday. The release notes add that cron jobs now follow your main model and self-heal, re-running after 5, 15 and 30 minutes if a fire never reached the model.
The new models
Per the release notes, this is the Claude 5.5 and GPT-6 model wave. Pickable on Nous Portal, OpenRouter and native routes where offered:
- Claude Fable 5.1, Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5
- GPT-6 Astra, Sol and Luna, plus GPT-6.1 Sol
- Gemini 4 Argon
The model picker also knows your plans now. You can star favourites, see a subscription running low ("17% left · resets 3:00 PM"), and pick reasoning effort as part of choosing a model. You switch before you hit the wall, not after. If you want to see how these models compare on real tasks, check Goldie Bench.
What v0.22.1 adds
v0.22.1 landed on 14 October. Per its release notes, it is a patch release with a handful of fixes for the Windows Store, plugin updates and more. The most visible change for normal users is a curated model list at the top of the model picker, so the good options are right there.
Upgrade notes worth knowing
The release notes have an Upgrade notes section. These are the ones that matter for most people:
- Windows desktop is MSIX-only and needs Windows 11 22H2 or newer. The macOS app is Apple Silicon only in default builds.
- Chats no longer reset on an idle or daily timer. Use /new or /reset to start fresh.
- Old sessions are pruned automatically. Ended sessions inactive for 90 days are deleted at startup. Pinned and open sessions are never touched, and sessions.auto_prune: false keeps everything.
- Memory providers moved to catalog plugins (Honcho, Supermemory, Hindsight, Mem0, OpenViking, Holographic). Existing users are migrated with data intact.
Python 3.14 is now the runtime for managed installs, and the package manager installs it for you.
How to start
Download Hermes Desktop. Open it. Talk to the setup chat. Then pick your brain: the free welcome model, a paid model, or a local one running on your own machine.
My take: learn the basics now and you get every upgrade that follows for free. The people who start today will be the ones who know what to do when the next release lands. My Agent OS guide shows how Hermes fits into a full setup.
Inside the AI Profit Boardroom ($69/month) you get the Agent OS with Hermes, Claude and OpenClaw plugged in together. That is a zip file, a video walkthrough and a 30-day roadmap, updated for new Hermes versions, plus 4 coaching calls a week with 3,400+ members.

FAQ
What is Hermes Agent v0.22?
It is the 13 October 2026 release of Nous Research's open AI agent. Per the release notes it brings a setup chat on a free trial model, Connectors, one-click local models, stable releases, signed desktop packages and a 600-plugin catalog.
Why is it called the Threshold Release?
Hermes was the god of thresholds. The release notes say v0.21.0 assembled the pantheon and v0.22.0 is about getting through the door, meaning it is all about making the first step easy.
Is Hermes Agent v0.22 free?
A first desktop install gets the free nous/welcome model as a one-time trial, once per OS user, so onboarding needs no key. Connectors start with a free connectors-only identity, and local models run with no account or API key. Paid models still need a provider.
