The fastest way to learn how to learn creating ai agents is to design one agent with one clear job, write its instructions in plain English, give it only the tools that job needs, then test and fix it until it works every time. Creating agents is a design skill, not a coding skill. You're deciding what the agent does, how it behaves and what it's allowed to touch.

This guide is about creating your own custom agents: a researcher, a writer, an inbox assistant, whatever your work needs. Not general AI learning. Not installing software. Designing agents that do a job well.

If you'd rather learn this with full courses, live calls and a ready-made multi-agent system, the AI Profit Boardroom ($69/mo) covers it. Here's the method I use.

Creating an Agent vs Using an Agent

Most people use an AI agent like a general helper. They open it, ask for something, close it. That's fine, but it's not creating an agent.

Creating an agent means you've designed it for a purpose. It knows its job. It knows how to behave. It has the right tools, remembers what matters and has saved skills for the work it repeats. When you open it, you don't explain anything. It's ready.

The difference is like hiring a temp every morning versus having a trained team member who already knows the job.

How to Learn Creating AI Agents in Six Steps

Every good agent I've created followed the same six steps. Learn these and you can create an agent for almost any job.

1. Define the Job

Start with one sentence: "This agent does X for Y so that Z." For example: "This agent researches competitors for my agency so I can write better proposals."

If you can't write that sentence, the agent isn't ready to create. Vague jobs make vague agents. One job per agent is the rule.

2. Write the Instructions and Persona

Now write how the agent should behave. Who is it? What tone does it use? What does good output look like? What should it never do?

Keep it plain. "You are a research assistant for a small marketing agency. Be brief. Always give sources. Put findings in a table. Never guess a number." That's better than a page of fancy prompt tricks.

3. Give It the Right Tools

An agent is a model plus tools, memory and instructions. Tools are what let it act: browse the web, read files, search, send things. Give it the tools its job needs and nothing more.

A researcher needs web browsing. A writer needs access to your files. An inbox assistant needs your email. Extra tools just give the agent more ways to go wrong. If you need to plug in a new app, MCP is the standard way to connect it, and you can ask your agent to set that up for you. My guide on the best Hermes Agent skills shows what's worth adding.

4. Add Memory

Tell the agent what it should always know: your business, your customers, your preferences, your style. Good memory means you stop repeating yourself and the output gets more accurate over time.

5. Save Skills for Repeat Work

A skill is a saved set of instructions for a job the agent repeats. When you've done a task twice and liked the result, ask the agent to save it as a skill. Next time you just name the skill and give it the new input.

6. Test and Iterate

Run the agent on five real tasks. Write down where it went wrong. Then fix the instructions, not the output. If it keeps making the same mistake, the instructions are missing something. Repeat until it gets the job right without you stepping in.

The Agent Design Template

Before you create any agent, fill this in. It takes ten minutes and saves hours of fixing a badly designed agent later.

FieldWhat to writeExample
NameA short name that says the job.Competitor Researcher
JobOne sentence: does X for Y so that Z.Researches competitors for my agency so I can write better proposals.
PersonaWho it is and how it sounds.A brief, careful research assistant.
InputsWhat you'll give it each time.A company name and website.
OutputExactly what good looks like.A table of services, pricing pages and positioning, with sources.
ToolsOnly what the job needs.Web browsing and file saving.
MemoryWhat it should always know.My agency's services and ideal clients.
SkillsRepeat jobs to save.Competitor snapshot, proposal notes.
RulesWhat it must never do.Never guess a number. Never contact anyone.
TestHow you'll check it works.Run on five known competitors and compare.

Create Agents by Describing Them to Your Agent

Here's the part most people miss. You don't have to build the agent by hand. You can ask your existing agent to create it.

The old way: read docs, edit config files, copy settings, hope nothing breaks. The new way: fill in the template above, paste it into your agent and say something like, "Create a new agent profile from this design. Set up the instructions, tools and memory, then tell me how to use it."

Your agent does the technical setup. You do the thinking. That's how I create agents, and it's what I tell everyone who asks. Don't hand-edit settings. Paste a prompt and let the agent handle it. If something breaks, paste the error back in and ask it to fix it.

This also makes iteration easy. Want to change the persona? Tell the agent. Want to remove a tool? Tell the agent. You're managing a design, not maintaining code.

Create Specialist Agents as Separate Profiles

Once your first agent works, create more. The best setup is several specialist agents, each with its own profile, instead of one agent trying to do everything.

A profile is a separate version of your agent with its own settings, memory and job. That separation matters. Your writer doesn't need your inbox. Your inbox assistant doesn't need your research notes.

The Researcher

Job: find and summarise information. Tools: web browsing, file saving. Rules: always give sources, never guess. Output: tables and short summaries.

The Writer

Job: draft content in your voice. Tools: access to your files and past examples. Memory: your style, your audience, words you never use. Output: drafts ready for your edit.

The Inbox Assistant

Job: sort email and draft replies. Tools: your email. Rules: draft only, never send without approval. Output: a short list of what needs you and drafts for the rest.

You can also run an agent inside a chat app so it's on your phone when you need it. My guide on the Hermes Agent bot shows how. And if you want to see how many specialist agents work together as one system with a dashboard and missions, read my Agent OS guide. Agent OS is only available inside the AI Profit Boardroom.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I learn creating AI agents without coding?

Fill in an agent design template, then ask your existing AI agent to create the new agent from it. You describe the job, persona, tools, memory and rules in plain English, and the agent does the setup. When you want changes, you ask for them the same way. No coding needed.

What makes a good AI agent?

A good AI agent has one clear job, plain instructions with a defined output, only the tools that job needs, memory of what matters, saved skills for repeat work and clear rules on what it must never do. Most importantly, it's been tested on real tasks and fixed until it gets them right.

How many agents should I create?

Start with one. Get it working well on real tasks before you create a second. After that, add a new specialist profile whenever you find a job that keeps coming up and doesn't fit an existing agent. A researcher, a writer and an inbox assistant is a solid starting team for most businesses.
