Grok Bot arrived in early public beta on 11 August 2026 behind a waitlist and a $200 price tag, and within about a day a free, open-source rival doing the same job landed on GitHub. I ran both side by side the day the clone dropped, so this OpenMausBot vs Grok Bot comparison is based on what actually happened on my screen, not a rewrite of anyone's launch thread.

The 24-hour story is worth telling properly. xAI shipped Grok Bot first: waitlisted, $200, access through the top Grok and Cursor tiers, plus a free trial for X subscribers. My trial ran out of tokens in roughly twenty minutes. Then a builder called Milind Soni shipped OpenMausBot — you'll occasionally see it written Open MouseBot — a free, open-source Mac app on GitHub that copies the idea almost exactly. One day. That's how obvious this product category has just become.

Running both apps through identical tasks on launch day is my Goldie Bench habit applied to products instead of models: same jobs, same afternoon, judge only what comes back. Here's what came back.

What Both Apps Actually Are

Put them next to each other and they look strikingly similar, because they're the same idea. Each is a Telegram or WhatsApp-style app where every contact in your sidebar is a real AI agent with its own job, its own memory, its own connected apps and its own computer. You message the research bot and it goes off and researches. You message the email bot and it drafts replies. You approve the things that matter, and the rest just happens.

I keep calling this version two of AI. Version one was one assistant in one chat box, with you feeding it prompts all day. Version two is a team you message like colleagues — and it's the shape everything serious is converging on. Grok Bot is built on it. OpenMausBot is built on it. My own Agent OS is built on it, and tools like Prime Agent were pointing this way months ago.

So the real question isn't whether the team shape wins. It's which door you walk through — and that's where these two split hard.

OpenMausBot vs Grok Bot: The Differences That Matter

Cost and access

Grok Bot is $200, waitlisted, gated behind the top Grok and Cursor tiers, and metered — my X-subscriber trial burned through its tokens in about twenty minutes of testing. OpenMausBot is free, open source and has no waitlist. Crucially, it doesn't ask for API keys: it drives the Claude (Claude Code), Codex or Grok logins you already pay for, through their CLIs. If you've got a Claude subscription, you've already got the brains — OpenMausBot just wraps the team around them. I've written a full setup walkthrough in my Grok Bot free alternative guide, so I'll keep the how-to light here.

If you want the agent-team future without betting on one app, the AI Profit Boardroom ships the Agent OS that outlasts every launch-week fad. → Build on solid ground

Model choice

This genuinely surprised me. Grok Bot can't change the model — you get what xAI gives you. OpenMausBot has a per-bot model picker: Fable 5, Opus 5, Sonnet 5, Haiku, Codex, Grok 4.5. My writing bot runs on one brain and my research bot on another, which is exactly how a team should work — the same routing logic I dug into in OpenCode vs OmniRoute. Locking every job on your team to a single model feels like a strange call in 2026.

Polish, and whether the bots can talk to each other

Now the honest bit in the other direction. Grok Bot is smoother, noticeably. The onboarding is genuinely nice — it felt easier to get going with than Codex. OpenMausBot has open-source rough edges: messy formatting in places, approval prompts that get repetitive, the usual just-launched jank.

Agent-to-agent is the clearest gap. Grok Bot's agents can coordinate with each other. When I tried tagging one OpenMausBot bot from another, it simply didn't understand what I wanted. That will likely get fixed — it's open source and it's day one — but today Grok Bot wins the teamwork test. If you want to see what proper agent coordination looks like over a long run, my Hermes agent paperclip experiment is the bar I hold everything to.

The computers — and an honest warning about both

Both apps give each bot its own computer, which is the headline feature. Grok Bot spins up a cloud machine per agent with a live screen, and it keeps working after you close your laptop. OpenMausBot gives you a real cloud Linux desktop — live preview, take-over in the browser, built on computer-use tech from a project called CUA — or you can point a bot at your own Mac instead.

Here's the truth that applies to both: computer use is painfully slow right now. In my test, Grok Bot got stuck just typing hello into Google. Watching an agent fumble a search box while a metered trial burns tokens is not the future anyone was promised. For real work today, app integrations beat cloud desktops by a mile — which brings me to the next section.

Apps and skills

OpenMausBot ships a one-click app marketplace built on Composio: 500+ apps, including Gmail, Slack, Notion and Linear. Connect an app once and every bot on the team can use it. It also picked up my preloaded Claude skills automatically — my keyword-research skill pulled live Google Search Console data with zero API setup — and it sensibly asked for approval before touching my Obsidian vault. That's the good kind of surprise.

To be fair, Grok Bot connects apps smoothly too. My Gmail test had it drafting replies in my tone, learned from my sent mail. On integrations, both deliver; OpenMausBot's marketplace is simply wider and free.

Data and platforms

OpenMausBot is local-first: a small server runs on your Mac, and your conversations, keys and event logs live in a folder on your machine. The models themselves — Claude, Codex, Grok — are still cloud models, so it isn't fully offline, but the app's memory is yours. Grok Bot lives in xAI's cloud, full stop.

On platforms, Grok Bot's beta covers Mac, Windows, Linux and iPhone, with Android on the way. OpenMausBot is Mac now, with Windows coming and Linux coming after that — and it needs at least one AI CLI installed and logged in, which then auto-appears in the model picker.

Who Should Pick Which

OpenMausBot vs Grok Bot: Your Questions Answered

Is OpenMausBot free?

Yes. It's free and open source on GitHub, built by Milind Soni. Your only real cost is the AI subscription you already have — Claude, Codex or Grok — because it drives those logins rather than billing you separately.

Is OpenMausBot as good as Grok Bot?

Not on polish. Grok Bot onboards more smoothly and its agents coordinate with each other. OpenMausBot wins on price, model choice and keeping your data on your own machine. It launched a day ago, so judge it as day-one software with a public repo behind it.

Can OpenMausBot bots talk to each other?

Not yet. When I tagged one bot from another, it didn't understand the request — Grok Bot handles that today. Because the project is open source, I'd expect agent-to-agent to arrive quickly.

Do I need Grok Bot access to use OpenMausBot?

No. There's no waitlist and no connection to xAI's beta. You download it from GitHub and it works with whichever AI logins you already have.

What do I need installed?

A Mac, plus at least one AI CLI — Claude Code, Codex or Grok — installed and logged in. Anything you've set up auto-appears in the model picker.

My Verdict

OpenMausBot vs Grok Bot in one line: Grok Bot is the better product today, and OpenMausBot is the better deal — and the only one most people can actually get. Is OpenMausBot as smooth? No. But it's free, it's open source, and the waitlist maths does the rest. Because the code is open, you could even have Claude edit the program itself — I'm tempted to wire in local models just to see what happens. If you'll pay $200 for the polished version and you're through the door, take Grok Bot. If you want the agent team today, on the subscriptions you already pay for, take OpenMausBot. Either way, the team shape wins — the app is just the wrapper.
