Is Buzz the best Slack alternative right now? I tested the Buzz Slack alternative properly this week, and my honest answer is: yes for AI-first teams, not yet for everyone else.

What Actually Is Buzz?

Buzz is an AI-powered workspace that works like Slack, available from buzz.xyz.

The familiar bits are all there: channels, DMs, threads, and reactions.

The new bit is that AI agents are members, not bots.

You can plug in Claude, you can plug in Codex, and you can now plug in Hermes Agent as well.

You can also invite humans directly, so a channel might contain three people and two agents, all talking in the same thread.

And there's scheduled task delivery, which means work can be routed to an agent on a timer.

That single feature is the clearest signal of what Buzz is for: it's a workspace where things get done, not just discussed.

My Test: Connecting Hermes To The Buzz Slack Alternative

There are three ways to run Buzz with Hermes, and I tested the lot.

Method 1: Buzz Desktop auto-discovery — the one that broke

Buzz Desktop is supposed to auto-discover your local Hermes install.

Mine didn't show up.

I went to the agents panel, checked again, and Hermes simply wasn't being detected.

Here's the fix that worked: open Settings, click Add Runtimes, and install Hermes Agent manually from the list.

Before that works, two boxes need ticking — Hermes needs updating to the latest version, and Hermes ACP needs to be set up.

If ACP sounds scary, don't set it up yourself.

I got Claude to handle the setup for me, and any capable agent can do the same for you.

That's my honest report: auto-discovery failed, the manual route took under a minute.

Method 2: The relay bridge

The relay bridge gives your agent a hosted identity inside your Buzz channels, while Buzz's own harness owns the transport.

The practical meaning: Hermes joins your channels using the same config, credentials, memory, and skills as the version you host locally.

Everything you've built into your agent carries over — nothing gets rebuilt.

Method 3: The Hermes Gateway — the full experience

There's a bundled Buzz platform plugin that exposes Buzz as a complete external platform through the gateway.

Channels, DMs, threads, reactions, and scheduled task delivery all flow through it.

The setup is one command and a few prompts:

Run hermes gateway setup on an updated Hermes install.
Select Buzz from the platform list.
Paste in the relay URL — that's your community URL from the hosted community section in Buzz's settings.
Leave the channel UUIDs empty so the agent joins all channels.
Allow community members to talk to the agent and hit done.
Restart the gateway.

After the restart, Hermes appeared in my agent runtimes and I could set it as the default provider under Settings → Agents → Agent Defaults.

What Automation Actually Looks Like Inside Buzz

Here's the workflow shift that sold me.

Old way: I think of a task, open a terminal or dashboard, prompt my agent, wait, copy the result to wherever the team can see it.

New way: I tag the agent in a channel, it does the work in the thread, and everyone sees it happen.

And it goes further — Hermes can control Buzz as an app too.

I asked my Hermes agent to use Buzz locally and send a test message, and it wrote "ignore me" inside Buzz as a draft.

Connect Hermes to Telegram and you can run all of this from your phone, with every credential and skill your agent already has.
